HENRY RUSSEL’S LAST WORDS

I knew the Federal No.3 Miners needed a song, said Carol Thorn.  I just did not know who to get to write it.

Then in August, 2006 I went to see Diana Jones perform at the Blue Moose Café in Morgantown WV.  I had read an article about Diana tracing her roots back to birth family back in Tennessee.  I knew she would have a love of history.  I was really impressed by her drive to find her family.  After I heard her sang I asked her if she would write the song for the Federal No.3 Miners and Diana agreed to write the song.

I sent Diana the information about the mine and the explosion but she was having difficultly writing the song.  But after Diana received  Henry Russell’s last words off the death notes from Federal No.3 — Diana wrote the song in about 15 minutes.

Henry Russell spoke for all these men and he is telling there story now.  Thanks to the Russell-Solly Family and  Diana Jones.

There are different types of giving.  Henry Russell died at Federal Mine No.3 and my grandfather, Harold G. Smith died at Arkwright No.1.  And even now they are helping to build the Federal No.3 Memorial and Miners Memorial Park.
