Home of History, Genealogy Research of Grant and Clinton Districts of Mon Co., WV
The Great Monongahela River flows north between Clinton and Grant Districts of Monongalia County, West Virginia. In Grant District on the other side of the river from Smithtown and Halleck areas are the communities of Lowesville, Edna Gas, Brady, Everettville, Arnettsville and National. All these areas were coalmining camps.
Along the river between Edna Gas and National was a community called “Flaggy Meadows” the Stone Quarry was located near there.
With all work in these areas men would come over in boats from Clinton District to work the stone quarry and the mines.
Anyone interested in working on finding the “lost history” of the coal camps and family history of the people who lived in the areas contact us by email, phone or mail.
We want to build a library and bring this history home to the area. Also make a Miners Memorial Park at the Federal Mine No.3 Site. That is the plan.
Info on Carol Thorn: Carol has been doing genealogy for 44 years, she has a great love of history and is very dedicated to building the Miners Memorial for the 149 men who died in Everettville. Carol lost her Grandfather, Harold Gordon Smith in a coalmining accident at Arkwright No.1 Mine in 1965.
These are some of the names in Carol’s Family Research:
Family Archive names: Thorn, McCauley, Smith, Jeffers, Matthews, Musgrave, McWilliams, Downey, Harr, Costilow, Longstreth (My Revolutionary War Ancestor), Vanguilder and Morgan. #
